History

Welcome to Downham House, a newly remodeled Italianate Victorian tucked in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Built in 1872 by E.E. Downham, a whiskey distiller, entrepreneur, and former mayor of Alexandria, this residence is one of the few remaining examples of high-style Victorian architecture in the city. The Downham family was known to picnic in the gardens of the nearby Lee-Fendall House Museum, which remains open to visitors today.

Inside, original heart-pine floors, ornate Italian marble mantels, plaster moldings, and custom parlor shutters speak to its 19th-century grandeur. William Morris wallpapers, brass hardware, and a Victorian-inspired palette give each room a bold, layered elegance. Blending history with modern comforts, the home now boasts high-speed internet, a gourmet kitchen, and beautifully updated bathrooms—all while preserving its timeless character.

Catering and Gatherings

Downham House recently opened its doors for a private showcase on September 25th, offering a glimpse into how this historic home transforms into the perfect event space. Guests were welcomed with beautifully curated charcuterie boards on each floor and passed hors d’oeuvres by Bittersweet Catering.

The home’s eye-catching florals by Helen Olivia Flowers echoed the Victorian-inspired color palette, while a statement bar cart designed by Zelenika Design Co added a chic focal point. The thoughtful styling tied every detail together proving that Downham House is just as suited for modern celebrations as it is for overnight stays.
